I’m handing my blog over to Kacey from The Drifter Collective today! She has some tips for choosing the perfect colors for your kitchen!
6 Steps to Choosing the Perfect Colors For Your Kitchen
The kitchen is often called the heart of the home, and for good reason: it’s the place where the entire family gathers to share meals, conversations, and laughs. As such, you can’t just choose any color scheme for your kitchen — you want it to be perfect.
To make the task a bit easier, we’ve gathered six tried-and-true steps for choosing the right colors for your kitchen. Taking your floors, cabinets, backsplash, and walls into consideration may seem overwhelming, but, with these tips in mind, you’ll be sure to create a room that’s representative of you and your family, thus making it the perfect place to serve as your home’s centerpiece.
- Start Somewhere
The process for choosing colors can be so overwhelming that you may not have even started — don’t fall into this trap. Instead, find something you love, whether it be a floor tile, paint chip or fabric pattern with which you’ll cover your kitchen chairs. Use that color or colors to inspire the rest of your palette. And, as you do so, be sure to bring your inspiration piece along with you whenever you shop to make sure what you’re buying will, indeed, go with your inspirational element.
- Peruse Dream Kitchens Online
If you’re wanting for inspiration, there’s no shortage of it online or in magazines. The pages of interior design magazines and the Pinterest boards of home renovation aficionados are overflowing with images of dream kitchens that you can use to inspire your kitchen makeover.
You probably won’t be able to copy them to a T, especially if you’re not completely renovating your space this time around. But seeing how professionals have put together colors and patterns can help you do the same. You can even lift their color palettes and use them in your own space — we won’t tell anyone.
- Consider Paint Finishes
One of the most common questions asked before painting a space is what type of finish will work best in a space. This is a great question, because the finish you choose can completely change the way the color looks from the way you see it on a swatch.
A glossy finish, as the name suggests, will give your kitchen walls a sheen that’s resistant to stains. This is great news if you’ve got a household of messy eaters, but perhaps not the ideal finish if your kitchen is regularly drenched in sunlight. If that’s the case, go for a flat finish, which is known to absorb excess light. You can also try a sample of eggshell or satin paint to see what look suits your tastes and your space.
On that note, always be sure to test a sample of your paint on the wall before committing to covering your entire space in it. Look at it in natural light and artificial light to make sure you like it round-the-clock.
- Try Unconventional Pops of Color
An electric shade brushed onto the walls of your kitchen might feel a bit overwhelming, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a more proportionate pop of color. You could always choose one wall to be your accent wall, painting it and only it a bolder shade than the rest of your walls. You could also tile your backsplash in a brighter hue, for example, or choose small countertop appliances in bright colors to make the rest of the space more cheerful and unique.
- Invest in Neutrals
Your walls and even your backsplash won’t be the biggest investments you make in your new kitchen. Your countertops, cabinets, floors and appliances will be what adds value and stays with your home for a much longer period of time. Imagine, then, that the colors you’re choosing will be used to help sell your property down the line. Neutral granite countertops, hardwood floors and quality cabinets will all help you walk away with a bigger profit.
- Go With Your Gut
No matter what you see in magazines or in your friends’ kitchens, it’s you who has to live with the color palette you choose. And, it just so happens that you know your tastes best.
While there are some tips that are smart for investment purposes or to give your design choices a bit more longevity, the color palette you choose will eventually come down to what you like. So, don’t be afraid to choose a look that’s off the beaten path — you’ll be sure to love and appreciate the design more if it has your personal stamp on it. And, if you take your own instincts seriously, then it will.
How will you update your kitchen with color? Hopefully, the above six tips have inspired your next home renovation project. Whether it’s big or small, your next color update is sure to change the feel of your kitchen for the better — and everyone in your family is sure to appreciate that.
